REVIEW ON BOVINE BRUCELLOSIS AND ITS PUBLIC HEALTH SIGNIFICANCE IN ETHIOPIA

Summary: Bovine brucellosis is a highly infectious, contagious, zoonotic, and economically important bacterial disease of animals, wildlife and humans worldwide caused by Brucella abortus. It is mainly infective for cattle, but occasionally other species of animals such as sheep, swine, dogs and horses. The disease is an endemic in most of the developing world that causes devastating losses to the livestock industry and small-scale livestock holders. It’s occurrence in new areas as well as transmission from wild and domestic animals is of great significance in terms of new epidemiological direction. It is also one of the most important infectious that causes reproductive disorders in domestic animals mainly cattle.  The disease transmitted mainly to animals by ingestion of contaminated feed and water, by contact with infected aborted fetus, fetal membrane and genital discharges, and by artificial insemination from infected bulls. The bacteria preferentially localized mainly in the reproductive tract of pregnant animals specifically uterus and consequently cause abortion (late abortion), retained fetal membrane and infertility, whereas orchitis and epididimitis are seen in males. In humans, bovine brucellosis typically manifests as a variety of non-specific clinical signs. The economic and public health impact of bucellosis remains of particular concern in developing countries.  Among the serological tests, RBPT for screening and CFT for confirmatory are routinely used in Ethiopia. Control program for the disease include vaccination of young and mature animals and slaughter of infected animals and disposal of animals following serological test. Therefore, formulating effective control strategies are needed that includes surveillance to identify infected animals, and prevention of transmission to non-infected animals and removal of the reservoir to eliminate the source of infection is vital.

ABSTRACT: A cross sectional study was conducted from October 2017 to May 2019 in Benishangul Gumuz Regional State to assess the factors contributing for animal health service delivery problems. The respondents were assessed for the existing problems in the veterinary service delivery system including the possible factors contributing for the occurrence of the problems. They were interviewed for their perception at the curing potential of drugs, their level of satisfaction with service delivered by the public animal health service centers, their preference of choice to present their sick animals for treatment, the possible diagnostic techniques that have been carried out at the public animal health service centers and animal health posts as well as the trust they have on the drugs provided by the public animal health service centers. A total of 347 animal owners specifically 138,76,69,33 and 31 in Assosa, Dibate, Wombera, Kurmuk and Kamash woreda respectively, were randomly selected. The case of dissatisfaction of animal owners with the service of public animal health sectors was identified in all five sample woredas including the highest in wombera (68.2%) whereas the lowest in dibate(26.3%). Generally, the proportion of respondents with dissatisfaction was evaluated as 38.3%. The drugs for treatment of animals infected with endemic diseases had not been distributed throughout all woredas proportionally in accordance with its need in the area of application. The animal health service delivery system had not been well equipped with adequate diagnostic materials as well as the professionals had not been well equipped by the necessary professional quality. Privatization had not been given an attention by concerned government sectors and the animal owners considered the public animal health service sector as the only sector to get service with this regard. As a result, most of the animal owners were identified to have better trust and prioritize the public sector of animal health service. The infrastructures like road, electric system, means of communication and transportation was identified as poor. The refreshment or short- and long-term training had not been provided regularly for animal health professionals to upgrade their knowledge. The animals had not been diagnosed properly to identify the right cause of the disease which may lead miss-diagnosis and miss-treatment. Hence the animal health service sectors should be well equipped by diagnostic equipment and personals.

Improvement of Swelling Soil Properties Using Crushed Glass Wastes and Lime

Abstract: Expansive soil is a soil that has large changes in volume when there is a change in its water content, and it is found in many areas in Egyptian valleys. This research aims to study the effect of using locally low-cost materials such as crushed glass wastes and lime to improve the engineering properties of expansive soil. The expansive soil that has been studied is taken from Al-Kawamil city (New Sohag city); the Sohag region is considered unsuitable soil for civil engineering projects such as roads and buildings, as it was classified according to the AASHTO classification A-7-6.  The percentage of soft materials passing through sieve No. 200 (0.075 mm) was more than 90%. This soil was treated only with different ratios of crushed glass wastes (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) by the expansive soil weight, as well as the soil was treated only with different ratios of lime (0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%) by the expansive soil weight. Atterberg limits (liquid limit, plastic limit, and plasticity index), standard proctor test (optimum moisture content and maximum dry density), and swelling test were carried out. The results have shown an improvement in the engineering properties of the expansive soil, such as Atterberg limits and swelling pressure, by increasing added percentage of crushed glass waste and lime separately. This helps to make use of the local materials available at low cost, make the environment clean from glass wastes and recycle these wastes so they can be utilized at the environmental, economic, and engineering levels. This matches the sustainable development strategy of Egypt's vision 2030 in both the environmental and economic dimensions.

Abstract:  What is the future of India's monsoonal climate changes and natural calamities going to be like in the coming years and decades?  Here is an important point to bring to the notice of Indian governments, scientists, engineers, officers, farmers, people, and various sectors, schemes, and plans, just like the present subject, the Public Health and Allied Services, to be aware of one thing.  According to the Indian Monsoon Time Scale, invented by me, India is currently rapidly entering the throes  of the “Heavy Rains & Floods Era.” As a result, India is going to be plagued by heavy rains and floods until around 2070. These conditions now rose and peaked around 2045 and then began to subside by 2070. However, this does not mean that floods occur in all years. There are more flood years and fewer drought years. I have conducted extensive studies on all aspects of the monsoonal climate changes that are going to occur in the coming years and decades and the catastrophic situations that will arise in the broader sectors, plans, schemes, etc. just like the present  Public Health and Allied Services due to these monsoonal climate changes that are likely to occur in the coming seasons, and based on these studies, I have made some suggestions regarding the preventive strategies that need to be adopted in accordance with those circumstances. Therefore, if there are any useful aspects in these proposals, the Public Health and Allied Services can take them into consideration and implement them more effectively.
