Complex Neurovascular Reactivity in Patients with Focal Epilepsy

Abstract: Background: Complex neurovascular activation by transcranial Doppler (TCD) is not presented at the moment in drug-responsive patients with focal epilepsy. The objective of this study is to assess the neurovascular activation to complex visual stimulation of drug-responsive patients with focal epilepsy during interictal period. Methods: Twenty-five patients with focal epilepsy and 25 healthy subjects were screened for this study in our Neurosonology Laboratory. We performed transtemporal TCD recordings from the P2-segments of both posterior cerebral arteries (PCA) simultaneously during complex visual stimulation at least ten days after last epileptic attack. The individual reactivity was defined as a relative increase of the blood flow velocities as a percentage change of the baseline values. Results: Most of the patients have an epileptic focus in the temporal lobe documented by the EEG. The Doppler data of the epileptic sides and non-epileptic sides were analyzed separately. The complex visual reactivity was significantly higher at the epileptic side in the patients (52.5%) from those of the controls (36.8%) (p=0.002). Discussion: In contrast to the earlier reports of the studies which were found diminished neurovascular reactivity to simple or complex visual stimulation using TCD, our study showed the temporal and occipital region of the patients with focal epilepsy have hyperactive neurovascular units at the epileptic side during the interictal period when comparing with the healthy subjects. Although to emphasize the importance of investigating neurovascular coupling in epilepsy, further studies are needed.

Comparison of  the Effects of Marine Omega-3 Fatty Acids and ibuprofen on primary dysmenorrehea.

Abstract: Dysmenorrhea is common gynecological problem among women. This study was done to examine  the effects omega-3 fatty acid compared to ibuprofen on dysmenorrhea. A double- blind crossover study was conducted among 18-22 years old female student. Women assigned to group 1 received 2 omega-3 capsules daily in the morning and night after food for 2 month and group 2 receive 400 mg ibuprofen very 8 hours in three days. It was a one month washout period. Then each group received drug other group. Data were gathered the start, after 8  and 20 weeks by using the Cox Menstrual Symptom Scale questionare. Data were analyzed using spss 16.0 via Paired t- test and Repeated Measurement. The mean age of students was 20.35 ± 1.03 years and their mean BMI was 21.03 ± 2.40 kg /m2. Result showed a marked reduction in pain intensity after treatment with omega-3(P<0.05). Also our results indicate that in the first day(P=0.28), the second day(P=0.30)  and the  third day(P=0.67) of  menstruation,  the effect  of omega-3 and ibuprofen  was similar. The results indicate that dietary supplementation with omeg-3 fatty acid can reduced noticeable pain as ibuprofen among young women with primary dysmenorrhea.

Detection of antibiotic resistant Enterobacteriaceae from dogs in the North West University Animal Health Hospital

Abstract: The aim of the study was to isolate and determine the antibiotic resistant profiles of Enterobacteriaceae isolated from dogs that visited the North West University animal hospital. Fifteen faecal samples were collected from the rectum of dogs that visited the North West University Animal Hospital, using sterile swabs and the samples were placed in transport media. The samples were immediately transported on ice to the laboratory for analysis. MacConkey agar that contains crystal violet was used for selective isolation of bacteria belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae. Only isolates that satisfied the preliminary identification tests (Gram staining, triple sugar iron agar test, citrate agar test and oxidase test) and confirmatory identification test (API 20E) were retained. Antibiotic susceptibility tests were performed on all positively confirmed isolates to determine their antibiotic resistant profiles against tetracycline (30µg), ampicillin (10µg), amoxicillin (10µg), penicillin (10µg), gentamycin (30µg) and streptomycin (10µg). A total of 120 isolates were positively identified as members of the Enterobacteriaceae. All the isolates were gram negative rods and oxidase negative. A large proportion (92.5%) of these isolates fermented the sugars in the TSI agar with only a small proportion (23.3%) producing hydrogen sulphide gas. However, a relatively larger proportion of these isolates (62.5%) produced gas from the fermentation of sugars. On characterizing these isolates for the ability to hydrolyze citrate, a large proportion (71.7%) were negative for this test. The API 20E test results indicated that bacteria species belonging to four main genera (Escherichia, Salmonella, Shigella and Klebsiella) were indentified. A large proportion (50%) of these isolates were identified as Escherichia coli while 25%, 15.8% and 9.2% were Salmonella spp., Klebsiella spp. and Shigella species, respectively. Isolates from all the samples were most often, resistant to penicillin, ampicillin, tetracycline and amoxicillin while very little resistance was observed against gentamycin and streptomycin. The MAR phenotypes PG-AP-A-T, PG-AP-A-T-S, PG-AP-A, PG-A-T and PG-AP-A-T-GM-S were dominant in isolates from samples analyzed. Although a large proportion of the isolates were resistant to three or more antibiotics, a cause for concern was the fact that some isolates were resistant to all antibiotics screened. The identification of multiple antibiotic resistance among the isolates ignites the need to establish appropriate testing procedures before the administration of drugs to animals, thus reducing the possibility of the development and transfer of antibiotic resistant genes between animals and humans.

Quality of life after cesarean and vaginal delivery

Abstract: Cesarean rates in recent decades have been increasing. A number of studies have shown that cesarean increases maternal morbidities. The aim of this study is to compare the quality of life after cesarean and vaginal delivery. This prospective study was carried out on 356 pregnant women visiting urban health centers in Shahroud City in north east Iran, in 2011. The subjects filled out the quality of life questionnaire in the third trimester of pregnancy and at 8 weeks postpartum. In primiparas, the mean global QOL scores for the cesarean and vaginal delivery groups were 67.65±12.7 and 72.12±11.8, respectively. Also, the scores for the physical, psychological, and social domains of QOL were higher in the vaginal delivery than the cesarean group (P<0.05). The means values of following variables were significantly different in the two groups: family income, age, and postpartum rehospitalization (P<0.05). Regression analysis revealed that after adjusting for age, income and postpartum rehospitalization, delivery type remained as a predictor of the score for the social domain (R2=3.3%, B=-.181 P=.022, CI [-12.4, .985]) and the global score of QOL (R2=2.4%, B= -.154, P=.049, CI [-7.732, -.018]). Cesarean affected the QOL of primiparas negatively while it did not affect the QOL of multiparas.. More studies should be done to examine the effects of cesarean on QOL in earlier stages of the postpartum.

Coping Strategy and Cosmetic Surgery: a Case Control Study

Abstract: Our body dissatisfaction may cause stress and lead us to take extreme and risky behaviors as response. This study was conducted to compare coping strategies among individuals undergone nasal plastic surgery and their controls. The study measured the association of coping strategies and cosmetic surgery. Participants were selected among individuals undergone cosmetic surgery came for first follow-up visit by their surgeons. Fifty patients undergone nasal surgery and 50 controls with no history or intention of applying for cosmetic surgery were recruited. Lazarus (1988) revised coping strategies questionnaire was used to measure coping strategies. Student paired t test was used to compare cases and control groups. Results suggest positive associations between cosmetic surgery and three subscales of coping methods (distance, excitement focused and escape – avoidance) (P<0.05). On the other hand, surgery group apply less active coping strategies: positive reappraisal, problem focused and problem solving strategies (P<0.05). In stressful situations like personal dissatisfaction, different individuals use different approaches which may lead them to adopt risky behaviors including cosmetic surgery.

Epidemiological and diagnostic Study for diarrheic agents (Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, and Cryptosporidium sp.) among diarrheic infected faeces patients by using multiplex polymerase chain reaction in the Babylon province, Iraq

Abstract: The current study included period was conducted from the October 2014 till February 2015 examination of 987 stool samples for direct smear method and 96 positive samples from these samples examined by polymerase chain reaction technique PCR. For patients infected with diarrhea (children and adults, male and female) who attended to Babylon maternity and children hospital and specialized Marjan Hospital for Internal and Cardiac Diseases in the Babylon province as well as primary health care and private clinics. and for age range from(Less than one year -31and more). The current study showed the rate of infection with parasites that causative of diarrhea 47.3% (E.histolytica, G.lamblia and Cryptosporidium sp.) were (26.4%, 17.9% and 3.7%, espectively). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)used to detect the causative of diarrhea (G.lamblia, E.histolytica and Cryptosporidium sp.) in microscope positive examined sample where it had record total of infection rate of 43.4% (31.3%, 28.1% and 2.2%, respectively).

Abstract: Absorptive capacity has been discussed in different perspectives in research literature. Different models of absorptive capacity in research literature highlight the developmental history. Processes and systems at macro level in relation to absorptive capacity have been taken into account but in general form. Antecedents highlighting successful implementation of absorptive capacity process have not studied so far. This study explores critical success factors with the organization for effective development of absorptive capacity. Results show success factors related to management processes and social mechanisms critical in development of absorptive capacity. Abstract: Acute myocardial infarction (MI) is typically precipitated by thrombosis superimposed upon a ruptured coronary plaque. CD36 is a multifunctional integral-membrane glycoprotein that acts as a receptor for thrombospondin, collagen, long-chain fatty acids, and oxidized LDL and it was be shown that CD36 can account for up to 40% of the binding and internalization of oxidized LDL by macrophages.  In a case-control study we evaluate the role of cd36 polymorphisms in predisposition to Myocardial Infarction among population of Tarabah province. Using PCR-RFLP three reported CD36 mutations (C478T, Del539AC and ins1159A) were screening in 120 MI Cases and 120 Healthy controls. None of the three mutations were detected in this study population (MI cases or controls). We concluded that these polymorphism were not detected in study population and have no role in genetic susceptibility to MI in Saudi population from Turabah in western region of Saudi Arabia. We recommend further large studies are needed to confirm the absence of these polymorphism in Saudi population in Turabah and  other regions.

Identification of Differentially Expressed Genes Induced by Poly Ethylene Glycol (PEG) in Maize

Abstract: In the present study, changes in the morphotype of non-regenable (NR) callus to regenable callus (R) of maize (Zea mays L.) and the transcript abundances of associated gene were investigated in callus treated with 10% and 20% polyethylene glycol (PEG). Differential display technique reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was used to study the effect of PEG treatment on two type of maize HiII genotype calli. Seven arbitrary primers were used to study the difference between R and NR callus as a result of PEG treatment. Results indicated that highest variations were shown among the treated samples examined with primers A1, R14, P2 and A13. Six different down regulated genes were observed, two, one and three genes were amplified in control samples with primer A1, R14, and p2, respectively. On the other hand total of 30 up regulated genes were observed in treated samples comparison to control. Nine of these genes were eluted, purified and sequenced. These genes might participate in the transformation of NR to R callus. Also, results revealed that their deduced amino acids, ATFP protein of Zea mays, putative pol protein, Opie2b gag protein, putative gag/pol protein, aminotransferase class III and Putative gag/pol precursor (Zea mays) protein were expressed as a result of PEG treatment. These results suggested that PEG as water regulator may have contributed to change NR calli to R calli by enhancing protein metabolism and its related genes.
