Stabilization of Soft Clay Soil by Deep Mixing

Abstract: East Port Said Port is considered one of the most important industrial regions in Egypt with soft clay soil. This paper focuses on the geotechnical properties of this area. To study the rehabilitation of this important region. Deep mixing method (DMM) with ordinary Portland cement or quicklime is used for soil improvement. In the laboratory, trial mix designs are used to compare soil properties before and after treatment. Effects of binder type, binder content, various water cement ratio and curing duration on soft clay improvement are studied. Three small-scale laboratory models (untreated soil model, model with end bearing deep mixing columns and model with floating deep mixing columns) are instrumented to measure the settlement of soil. Two Dimensional finite element analysis is carried out using PLAXIS program. A comparison between the 2D finite element analysis results and the physical model results is done. Results agree generally with each other. A finite element analysis is carried out to show the comparison between the performance of the soil with and without deep mixing. Effects of pile depth, pile spacing, pile diameter, pile type and soil compression index are illustrated in this study. Finally, according to the previous results, an equation is predicted to calculate the settlement using deep mixing method.

Effect of Doum (Hyphaene Thebaica) Fruit Water Extract on hypercholesteremic Rats

Abstract: Background: (Hyphaene thebaica) Doum water extract (DWE) contained important active compounds, such as phenolic and flavonoids that work as an antioxidant which help to control hyperlipidemic. Aims: The study aims to compare between the effect of DWE and (Statins) hypercholesterolemia medication on hypercholesterolemic rats after 4 weeks of treatment. Methods: Fifty-six male albino rats (160 – 180 g) were divided into 7 groups, each group consisted 8 rats. Group (1) Control negative, Group (2) were Control positive groups which fed with high cholesterol diet (HCD), Groups (3) to (7) fed HCD and treat w/wo (Atorvastatin) at (40 mg / kg of body weight) and doum water extract at doses of (20, 40mg/kg b. wt). Body weight gain% (BWG %), relative weight of liver, serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), lipoproteins fraction, and histopathological examination of liver were studied. Results: The results showed that, BWG% for hypercholesterolemic rat fed with DWE at two dosages (20, 40 mg/ kg) for four weeks was increased compared to control positive group. DWE significantly (p<0.05) decrease total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL concentrations compare to control positive group. Values of HDL concentration were significantly increased in all treated groups compared to control positive group. As well as a significant (p<0.05) reduction of liver weight at two dosages (20, 40 mg/ kg) by (14.79%) and (7.30%) respectively, than to control positive group. Histopathological analysis of liver section of rats that treated with DWE showed amelioration improvement of histological changes caused by high level of cholesterol when compared with control positive group. Conclusion: The study clearly revealed that consumption of DWE showed improvement of health status. Human studies are needed to confirm that effect on hypercholesterolemia.

Abstract: Assessment of genetic diversity in germplasm is prerequisite for the success of any plant breeding program. Twenty-four Sunflower inbred lines including 15 cytoplasmic male sterile lines (A lines) and nine fertility restorer lines (R lines) were sown to estimate genetic dissimilarities at research area of Oilseeds Research Institute, Faisalabad (Pakistan) during Spring 2018. The objective of study was identification of superior inbred lines to be utilize as parental inbred lines for the development of better recombinants and estimation of association among important qualitative and quantitative characters. Data revealed that Sunflower inbred lines possessed noticeable genetic variation and have potential for utilization in hybrid development program. Among A lines, ORI-92, ORI-94 and ORI-25 has proved their worth for good seed yield and can be employed in crossing with R lines RL-66, RL-68 and RL-50 having high Oleic acid content may give a better recombinant as they displayed high degree of genetic divergence among them. Moreover, yield had positive relationship with head diameter and Linoleic acid while negative relationship with Oleic acid.

ICT approach to bridge the smart city designing and planning gap

Abstract: The available discussions about smart cities and their applications are mainly driven by the administrators and the technologists all along with secondary inputs by the urban designers and the architects. Many smart city technologies applications depend mainly on ICT. Urban Designers and architects think that they don’t put great attention neither for the physical form or the shape of the city nor to the social culture and the political environment in which it will dwell. The currently existing discussion about smart cities focuses on the type of the socio-spatial consequences which it engenders is neglected. This paper proposes an idea which declares that ICT can not only be used by the technologists and administrators, but also by the architects and the urban designers which will practically minimize the large gap in this current mainstream discourse. This paper will also help researchers and planners in the field of designing and planning which will facilitate its usage by putting this new approach in consideration and applying the proposed principles.

Abstract: Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is considered to be one of the most prevalent diseases of the gastrointestinal system all over the world. one of the major risk factors of GERD is morbid obesity. during the last decade, the prevalence of obesity has increased significantly around the world. Many studies have suggested the association between obesity and GERD symptoms. The effect of weight loss on the incidence and severity of GERD symptoms was found to be significant, and weight loss is considered to be one of the lines important lines in managing GERD symptoms. Aim: We aim to compare between the different techniques of bariatric surgery, and study the use of laparoscopic mini-gastric bypass and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in the management and treatment of Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and decide which approach is associated with the best short and long term effects on the prevalence and symptoms of Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Methods: The current study is a retrospective study, conducted in Ain Shams University Surgery Hospital in Cairo During the period between March 2014 and July 2018, a total number of 110 patients have been enrolled in our study, we collected the patients from Ain Shams University Surgery Hospital, Cairo, Egypt. We included patients with Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) who fulfilled the inclusion criteria to underwent bariatric surgery in our hospital including a body mass index of more than 35 kg/m2, aged between 18 and 65, with one or more comorbidity and with failure of conservative treatment of obesity over a period of more than 2 years. We excluded patients with general contraindications to underwent abdominal surgery. In addition to sever cases of Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), patients with Hiatal hernias, patients with history of previous major abdominal operations and patient of inflammatory bowel disease. Results: Both groups were similar regarding the terms of age, sex, weight and average BMI. The rates of other comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia were almost identical in both groups. The changes in GERD score were significantly higher in the LRYGB patients (56.5%). While it was (41%) in the LSG group. a small number of patients experienced worsening of the GERD symptoms and were mostly in the LSG group. Conclusion: Both the most common bariatric surgery procedures were associated with improved GERD symptoms. We consider the Roux- en-Y gastric bypass to be the superior operation technique in improving GERD symptoms. Sleeve gastrectomy was associated with more de-novo GERD symptoms development. Some recent guidelines consider having a preoperative GERD symptom to be a contraindication to performing sleeve gastrectomy.

Til-18 (50022): A High Yielding Variety of Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.)

Abstract: The present research was started at Oilseeds Research Institute, Faisalabad, Pakistan to develop a high yielding Sesame variety having good quantitative and qualitative characteristics under the changing climate. The newly developed sesame variety “Til-18” is an outcome of hybridization (99004 x 99005) during 2003 and further rigorous selections from F2 following the pedigree method of plant breeding. Homozygous progenies of 50022 from F6 were bulked in 2009 for seed yield evaluation. Its performance was evaluated in Station Yield Trials, Zonal Yield Trials, Micro Yield Trials and National Uniform Sesame Yield Trials. In all yield trials its performance was better than the existing varieties. In 2015 and 2016, the strain gave 1817 kg/ha and 1874 kg/ha seed yield respectively at Oilseeds Research Institute Faisalabad (Pakistan) in Zonal Varietal Trial. In National Uniform Sesame Yield Trials 2016 and 2017 the performance of TIL-18 was better than TS-5 (check) by giving 9.5% and 8.8% more yield respectively. TIL-18 also showed better tolerance against insect pests, Phyllody diseases and Charcoal Rot. Agronomic studies revealed that TIL-18 performed better if cultivated from 1st to 30th June and with fertilizer one bag of Di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and half bag of Urea at the time of sowing and flowering, respectively, along with 1st and 2nd irrigation. Fatty acid profile analysis showed that it has good ratio of essential fatty acids as compared to check variety TS-5. Til-18 is a high yielding sesame variety suitable for both irrigated and rain fed regions which was approved in 50th meeting of Punjab Seed Council, Pakistan for general cultivation.

Abstract: Rapeseed is an important crop for the whole world among oilseed crops. Development of new cultivars which meet our requirements is a continuous process. Using statistics to find out the possible ways for manipulating the breeding program according to our need is the best accepted way in breeding. So, the present study was conducted to analyze the interrelationship among yield and yield related traits in ten promising B. napus L. genotypes from selected from preliminary yield trials at the farm area of Oilseeds Research Institute, Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad during 2016-2017. Sowing was completed in Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. Relevant data were recorded at already specified phenological and developmental stages. Analysis of variance was constructed. Phenotypic and genotypic interrelationship co-efficients (rp and rg respectively), path coefficients analysis and heritability analysis were done. Higher heritability was estimated for seed yield. At genotypic level, direct as well as highly significant relation was observed among all studied traits. Seed yield/plot depicted positive and highly significant phenotypic and genotypic association with primary branches/plant, days to flowering and days to physiological maturity. Besides, No. of primary branches/plant had direct association with duration of flowering and maturity, phenotypically. Plant height and number of branches had highest positive direct and highest total indirect effects on overall yield respectively. All these findings can assist in selection of genotypes with high yield, from a diverse germplasm, under normal field conditions.

Biological Effects of Hawthorn Leaves Powder and its Extract on Biological and Biochemical Change of Induced Obese Rats

Abstract: In present study aimed to clear effect of hawthorn leaves powder at (2.5, 5%) and its water extract at (250,500mg\kg) on obese rats. Thirty-six male rats (140±10g) were divided into six groups, Rats were treated with high fat diet (20% animal fat) to induce obese. The results showed that, (+ve) group had significant increase in weight gain, feed intake and feed efficiency ratio (FER), the best results showed in hawthorn powder 5% which decrease weight gain, feed intake and feed efficiency ratio compared to +ve group. The lower ALT, AST and ALP liver enzyme of treated group recorded for group fed on 500 mg/kg hawthorn extract with significant difference followed by hawthorn extract 250mg/kg in ALT, AST. Control (+ve) had increased significantly in Tc., TrG, LDLc and VLDLcc and decreased HDL compared to (–ve) control, The most decrease in Tc, TrG, LDLc, VLDLc and highest (HDL-c) levels recorded for rats fed on 500 mg/kg hawthorn extract. Hawthorn powder and extract showed a significant increase in GST, catalase, SOD and significant decrease NO compared to (+ve) group.

Success rate of ilizarov fixator method in patients presenting with infected non-union of tibia

Abstract: Background: Fractures of long bones are not only complex surgical problems but also chronic and at times debilitating conditions. Nonunion is a serious complication of a fracture and may occur when the fracture moves too much, has a poor blood supply or gets infected. Ilizarov method addresses all the above problems simultaneously and offers a panacea for infected non-unions. Objective: To assess the frequency of success of Ilizarov fixator in patients presenting with infected non-union of tibia. Methodology: It was descriptive case series study. For the current study 60 patients (n=60) were selected after taking the approval of research ethical committee of Jinnah hospital Lahore. An informed written consent was obtained from the patients undergone Ilizarov method of fixation in unit II, department of orthopedic surgery, Jinnah hospital Lahore. Patients undergo surgery by a single surgical team under spinal anesthesia. After surgery the patients were followed up. Excellent, good, fair and poor outcome labeled using ASAMI criteria. All the collected data was entered and analyzed on SPSS version 21. Results: In this study the mean age of the patients was 40.80±13.82 years, male to female ratio of the patients was 4:1. ASAM criteria found excellent result among 32(53.3%) patients, good in 17(28.3%) patients, fair in 8(13.3%) patients and poor in 3(5.0%) patients and the success was achieved in 49(81.67%) patients. Conclusion: According to this study the Ilizarov fixator is valuable and useful tool with high success rate in patients presenting with infected non-union of tibia.

Evaluation of the Role of Systemic Antibiotic Prophylaxis in the Control of Burn Wound Infection

Abstract: Background: Burn injuries constitute a major challenge in health care sector, Burns are produced by many etiologies such as chemicals, extreme heat (e.g., flame, hot surfaces and fluids), friction, radiation, or electricity and however the greatest common thermal injury are the scald burns in children less than 5 years of age. The most common complications of burns are involving infections with microorganisms, urinary tract infections, respiratory, wound, in addition to those accompanied with sepsis, whereas, deeper burns offer higher incidence of risk for inducing infections. In spite of, there are no guidelines or instructions for using of antibiotics as a prophylactic, systemic antibiotic usage in patients suffering from burns. Administration of systemic antibiotics must be given for selective cases with indication of infection. Methods: A prospective single arm study included patients admitted to Ain Shams specialized hospital-Burns department between the periods of Jan 2019 till Dec 2019. Patients will undergo swab and culture based antiobiotics for +ve cultures. Results: Pediatrics age group had worse outcome in terms of operative procedures when compared to adult age group whom had better spontaneous healing of their burns. Adult age group has significantly higher incidence of burn infection and positive swab culture than pediatrics age group. Adults had longer hospital stay than pediatrics, Swab culture results didn’t correlate to definitive outcome of patients. Conclusion: Prophylactic antibiotics had a limited role in prevention of burns infections and development of fatal septic complications, nevertheless it contribute to emergence of new resistant strains that lead us to hinder us, returning us to pre-antibiotics era.

Significance of serological biomarkers in follow up of Inflammatory Bowel Disease patients. A Clinical, Endoscopic and Histopathologic study

Abstract: The aim of this work is to investigate sensitivity and diagnostic accuracy of serum procalcitonin, serum iron and Red cell distribution width (RDW) for differentiating active from remission stages of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).60 Patients with confirmed IBD diagnosis (Crohn's and ulcerative colitis) were divided into 2groups (30 remission and 30 exacerbation) classified according to Truelove and Witts index in ulcerative colitis and Harvey Bradshaw index in crohn’s disease. Routine diagnostic investigations, serum Procalcitonin and serum iron level were withdrawn. Serum procalcitonin was done by commercially available ELISA kits. The study showed significant difference between the 2 groups as regards serum iron where median in remission was 52 mcg/dl while in activity was 26 mcg/dl (P value:0.033), RDW (P value:0.014) and serum procalcitonin where mean in remission was 0.62 ng/ml while in activity was 0.98 ng/ml ( P value:0.029). There was a positive significant correlation between CRP and degree of disease activity (P value: 0.01). There is negative non-significant correlation between serum iron and degree of disease activity (P value: 0.17). There is positive non-significant correlation between serum procalcitonin ( P value:0.08), RDW (P value:0.28) and degree of disease activity. RDW, serum procalcitonin and serum iron in IBD patients need to be included in further studies with larger sample size for the possibility to be used as future laboratory markers for disease activity.

Detection of most diverse and high yielding strains of chickpea (Cicer arientinum L.)

Abstract: Genetic variability is of prime importance for conservation of plant genetic resources. Existence of considerable amount of diversity for various valuable traits in genetic material of crop plants guarantees the world food security. The present investigation was carried out during 2018-19 at Gram Breeding Research Station, Kallurkot, Pakistan, to estimate the extent of variability and to identify the elite chickpea strains with better genetic constitution. Twenty elite genotypes were evaluated to sort out the better strains possessing valuable genetic makeup. The collected data was subjected to analysis of variance, principle component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis. PCA revealed that first two principle components extracted more than 1 Eigen values contributing 56.63 and 22.90 percent respectively in total variability. Higher positive loadings were expressed by number of pods, 100 seed weight and yield kg ha-1. Cluster analysis distinguished genotypes into four clusters. Dendrogram constructed on the basis of Euclidean distance showed that the members of cluster I and II possess higher genetic variation. Results also confirmed that the genotypes D-17006, D-17016 and Punjab-08 falling in cluster II were more diverse and high yielding. Therefore, genotypes of both clusters may be utilized in breeding program however, the members of cluster-II may be prefered for use as parents in chickpea hybridization program.
